Tesla Income Statement Analysis Sample

In this section of the financial report, I walk you through a broad definition as to what an income statement is and why it is important.  From this, I then discuss and define important income statement line items, such as revenues, gross profits, etc. in detail.  Finally, I offer a summary analysis of the company's important income statement line item trends.  For example,...

Tesla's Cost of Goods Sold.

The organization’s cost of goods ended in 2016 at $5.4 billion.  As compared to revenues, the cost of goods percentage was 85%.  In the next four years, the organization’s cost of goods would increase substantially, ending 2020 at $24.9 billion.  Further, the organization’s cost of goods as compared to revenues would increase substantially, ending 2020 at 91.4%.  The substantial increase in the cost of goods indicates that the organization is not increasing its sales prices to compensate for higher raw material costs.  Unfortunately, this strategy is not a sustainable trend for Tesla.  Either the organization needs to increase prices to improve their gross profit margin percentages, or the firm needs to do a better job negotiating prices for raw material costs.

Tesla Balance Sheet Analysis Sample

In this section of the financial report, I walk you through a broad definition of what a balance sheet is and why it is important.  From this, I then discuss and define important balance sheet line items, such as cash, inventory, etc., in detail.  Finally, I offer a summary analysis of the company's important balance sheet line item trends.  For example,...

Tesla's Property, Plant, and Equipment

Tesla’s property, plant, and equipment ended 2016 at $5.9 billion.  In the next two years, the organization’s property, plant, and equipment would increase to $11.3 billion.  However, in 2019, the firm’s property, plant, and equipment would fall to $10.3 billion only to rebound in 2020 to $12.7 billion.

The fluctuation in Tesla’s property, plant, and equipment is actually quite surprising because of the sustained demand for their electric vehicles.  Further, its perpetual decline in inventory also suggests that the company does not have enough property, plant, and equipment.  To mitigate this problem, the firm needs to invest substantially and continuously in this line item.

Tesla Financial Ratios Sample

In this section of the financial report, I walk you through definitions of various popular financial ratios, how to calculate the ratios, formulas used, etc. Also, for some popular financial ratios, I provide brief explanations of what the ratios mean as it is related to the company.

Tesla's Fixed Asset Turnover Ratio

Tesla ended 2016 with a fixed asset turnover of 1.06.  In the next year, the organization would slightly underutilize its fixed assets, which would result in a fixed asset turnover ratio of .96.  Fortunately, in the next three years, the organization’s fixed asset turnover would continually improve, ending 2020 at 2.14.  This trend shows that the firm is continually improving its utilization of fixed assets.  Further, this also indicates that the organization may need additional fixed assets to meet customer demand.

Tesla's Return on Equity

Tesla’s return on equity ended 2016 at -16.2%.  In the next year, the firm’s return on equity would fall substantially, ending the year at a -52.8%.  However, again, the firm would improve substantially on its return on equity ending 2020 at 3.8%.  The vast improvement in the organization’s return on equity may come from its continued reliance on debt.  As an organization takes on more debt, the company is inevitably increasing its return on equity.  However, the company is taking steps to reduce its debt.  As the company’s debt falls, then the return on equity may also decrease as well.
