Contractor Business Plan Templates: Do You Need a Business Plan to Get a Contractor Loan?
The truck, the trailer, and the tools usually come before the big jobs. That is why most contractors end up at the bank.
For a startup or a bigger loan, the answer is usually yes, you need a plan. Build it on how you actually price and win work.

What Gets a Contractor Funded
Lenders have seen plenty of good tradespeople go broke. They want to see the business side is solid too.
- A price that covers the whole job. Materials, labor, your share of overhead, and profit.
- A pipeline you can name. Referrals, the general contractors you sub for, bids, or ads.
- The equipment the work requires. What you are buying, what it costs, and what you are putting in.
Licensing, insurance, and credit still matter. The plan shows the rest.

What the Trade Models Already Handle
Enter how you bill and what it costs.
- Jobs drive the revenue. Construction starts from the average job, Roofing from the average roofing system, Lawn Care from the average lawn service, Cleaning from the average cleaning. The rest from average customer sales.
- Startup costs for the trades. Vehicle or work truck, tools, equipment, inventory, supplies, advertising, and working capital.
- A monthly P&L and five years out. Plus a summary with charts, from your inputs.
- A Word plan for your trade. Swap in your service area, crew, and customers.
Example: Pricing One Job
Round numbers, illustration only. Use your own costs.
| Line | Example |
|---|---|
| Materials | $2,000 |
| Labor | $1,500 |
| Share of overhead (truck, insurance, office) | $600 |
| Total cost of the job | $4,100 |
| Profit at 20% | $820 |
| Price to quote | $4,920 |
Quote $4,100 and you worked for free. Quote below it and you paid to do the job. In the template, you enter your average job and what it costs, and the model shows whether the year leaves a profit.
Lender Questions for Contractors
These come up every time.
- How do you price a job? Show the build-up, not a guess.
- Are you licensed and insured? Lenders and customers both ask.
- What happens in the slow season? Weather and holidays slow the work.
- Why do you need this equipment now? Show the jobs that justify it.
Pick Who Builds Your Plan
Write it on a rain day, or have it written while you work.

- Pricing to beat the lowest bid. The lowest bid usually loses money.
- No overhead in the job price. The truck and insurance cost money every month.
- No pay for the owner. If you work the job, pay yourself.
- The same work every month. Most trades have seasons.
- Equipment before the work. Show the jobs first.
